What Is Behavior Acquisition in ABA?
Behavior Acquisition is the systematic teaching of new behaviors that improve a client’s functional independence. In practice, this means teaching communication, self-care routines, social interaction, academic responding, and daily living tasks — behaviors the learner cannot yet perform reliably.
Every acquisition program follows the same logic: identify the target behavior, use reinforcement contingent on correct responses, prompt when necessary, fade prompts systematically, and collect data throughout so the BCBA can determine what’s working.
Important Distinction
Behavior Acquisition (Unit C) teaches new behaviors. Behavior Reduction (Unit D) decreases existing problem behaviors. Both use reinforcement, but with opposite goals — you’re building something up or bringing something down.

Reinforcement Procedures (C.1)
Task C.1 is broad. It covers both positive and negative reinforcement, and requires you to deliver reinforcement immediately, contingently, and according to specific schedules — while varying along dimensions like magnitude, intensity, and variety.
Positive vs negative reinforcement
Positive reinforcement means adding something after a response to increase that response. A learner completes a task and receives praise or a preferred item.
Negative reinforcement means removing something aversive after a response to increase that response. A learner asks for a break using their communication device, and the demand is temporarily removed.
Both types increase the future frequency of the target behavior. The difference is whether something is added or removed after the response.
Immediate and contingent delivery
Two words matter most: immediate and contingent.
Immediate means within 1-2 seconds of the correct response. Any longer and the reinforcement contingency weakens — you may accidentally reinforce whatever behavior happened between the response and the delivery.
Contingent means the reinforcer is delivered only after the target response. Not before. Not “just because.” Contingent delivery is what strengthens the target behavior specifically.
Schedules of reinforcement
- Continuous reinforcement (CRF) — reinforcement after every correct response. Used during initial acquisition.
- Fixed ratio (FR) — reinforcement after a set number of responses (FR-5 = every 5th correct response).
- Variable ratio (VR) — reinforcement after a variable number of responses averaging a set number. Produces the highest, steadiest response rates.
- Fixed interval (FI) — reinforcement for the first correct response after a fixed time has passed.
- Variable interval (VI) — reinforcement for the first correct response after a variable time period.

Exam Trap
Delayed reinforcement is one of the most tested procedural errors. Any scenario mentioning delays of 5, 8, or 10 seconds after a correct response should trigger the answer “deliver reinforcement immediately.”
Establishing and Using Conditioned Reinforcers (C.2)
Task C.2 focuses on conditioned reinforcers — stimuli that acquire reinforcing value through association with other reinforcers.
Unconditioned vs conditioned reinforcers
Unconditioned (primary) reinforcers have reinforcing value without any prior learning. Food, water, warmth, and physical comfort are examples. These work biologically.
Conditioned (secondary) reinforcers gain their reinforcing value through repeated pairing with existing reinforcers. Praise, tokens, checkmarks, high-fives — none of these have inherent value. They work because they’ve been paired with things that do.
How to establish a conditioned reinforcer
- Present the neutral stimulus (like a checkmark on a sticker chart)
- Immediately follow it with a known reinforcer (like a favorite snack)
- Repeat this pairing consistently across many trials
- Gradually the neutral stimulus alone becomes reinforcing
Once established, conditioned reinforcers are useful because they’re portable, quick to deliver, and don’t cause satiation the way primary reinforcers do.
The key risk
Conditioned reinforcers must be periodically re-paired with primary reinforcers or they lose their value over time. A sticker that’s never exchanged for anything eventually stops motivating the learner.
Discrete-Trial Teaching / DTT (C.3)
DTT is a highly structured teaching approach where each learning opportunity is broken into a distinct, repeatable trial. It’s one of the most heavily tested procedures because it appears in many exam scenarios.
The four components of a DTT trial
- Discriminative Stimulus (SD) — the instruction, question, or cue that signals a response is expected. Example: showing a red card and asking “What color?”
- Response — what the learner does (correct, incorrect, or no response)
- Consequence — reinforcement for correct; error correction or no reinforcement for incorrect
- Inter-Trial Interval (ITI) — a brief pause (usually 3-5 seconds) before the next trial begins
The ITI is easy to overlook and heavily tested. Without it, trials blur into each other and the SD loses its discriminative power. A scenario where the RBT delivers the next SD immediately after reinforcement, with no pause, is a procedural error the exam will ask you to identify.
When DTT is the right choice

Naturalistic Teaching Procedures / NET (C.4)
Task C.4 covers naturalistic teaching, which the BACB describes as including “incidental teaching, natural environment training.” NET embeds instruction into whatever the learner is already interested in doing.
The core insight of NET
Motivation is the strongest teaching tool available. When you follow the learner’s existing motivation instead of manufacturing it artificially, learning tends to happen faster and generalizes more naturally.
How NET works in practice
A child is playing with toy cars, fully engaged, actively reaching for specific vehicles. This is when a request (mand) can be taught in a way that will actually stick. The RBT holds up a specific car she’s reaching for and waits — creating a learning opportunity. When she says “car” (or attempts to), the RBT immediately hands over the car. The car itself is the reinforcer.

Task Analyzed Chaining Procedures (C.5)
Task C.5 covers “task analyzed chaining procedures (e.g., forward, backward, total task).” Chaining teaches multi-step behaviors by breaking a complex task into individual steps.
Task analysis comes first
Before chaining begins, the BCBA creates a task analysis — a written list of every step. Example for handwashing:
- Turn on the faucet
- Wet hands under the water
- Apply soap
- Rub hands together for 20 seconds
- Rinse hands
- Turn off the faucet
- Dry hands
Forward chaining
Teach step 1 first, to independence. Then add step 2 (with prompts on remaining steps). When step 2 is independent, add step 3. Build forward.
Example: Teaching a peanut butter sandwich. First, the learner masters “get bread from the bag.” Only after this is fluent do you introduce “open the peanut butter jar.”
Backward chaining
Teach the last step first. The RBT prompts every other step, so the learner only performs the final step independently to complete the task and receive reinforcement.
Example: Shoe tying. The RBT guides the learner through crossing laces, making loops, and threading them. The learner independently pulls the loops tight — getting the reinforcement of a completed knot on every trial.
Total task chaining
The learner attempts every step on every trial. The RBT prompts only the steps where the learner struggles.
Example: Handwashing with a learner who can already turn on the faucet and use soap independently but needs help remembering to rub for 20 seconds. The RBT lets them run the entire chain, prompting only the rubbing step.
Exam Trap
Focus on which specific step the learner completes independently while others are prompted. Independent last step → backward. Independent first step, building sequentially → forward. Independent most steps with prompts only on weak ones → total task.
Discrimination Training (C.6)
Discrimination training teaches the learner to respond correctly to one specific stimulus while not responding to similar-but-different stimuli. Teaching a learner to identify “cat” from an array of animal pictures is discrimination training.
Two rules that make discrimination training work
- Rotate positions. If the correct card is always on the left, the learner learns “pick left” instead of “pick cat.” Rotating positions controls for position bias.
- Use varied incorrect options. If “cat” is always paired with the same wrong options, the learner memorizes the array rather than truly discriminating the target.
The successful discrimination test
A learner has mastered discrimination when they respond correctly to the target stimulus in random positions, paired with different distractor items, across multiple sessions.
Prompts and Prompt Fading Procedures (C.7)
Task C.7 covers “stimulus and response prompts that include appropriate fading procedures (e.g., errorless, least-to-most, stimulus fading, time delay).” Every prompt has an expiration date — the goal is to fade it so the learner responds to the natural SD alone.
The response prompt hierarchy (least to most intrusive)
- Gestural prompt — pointing, nodding, motioning toward the correct answer
- Verbal prompt — saying the answer, a partial hint, or a spoken cue
- Model prompt — demonstrating the response for the learner to imitate
- Partial physical prompt — light physical guidance to initiate the response

Stimulus vs response prompts
- Response prompts — added to the learner’s response (all of the above)
- Stimulus prompts — modifications to the SD itself. Placing the correct card closer, making it brighter, or larger.
Four prompt fading procedures (per BACB C.7)
Errorless learning
Use immediate prompts on every trial to prevent errors during acquisition. Fade prompts systematically as competence develops.
Least-to-most prompting
Present the SD. Wait about 3 seconds. If no response, add the mildest prompt. If still no response, add a stronger prompt. Promotes independence when the learner is ready.
Stimulus fading
Gradually reduce the intensity or salience of a stimulus prompt across trials. If a correct card was highlighted bright yellow, fade to lighter yellow, then no highlight.
Time delay procedures
- Constant time delay: Present the SD, wait a fixed number of seconds (e.g., 4), then prompt if no response. Same delay every trial.
- Progressive time delay: Start at 0-second delay (immediate prompt). Gradually increase to 1, 2, 3, 4 seconds across trials.
Key Concept
The goal of every prompt fading procedure is stimulus control transfer — shifting control of the response from the prompt to the natural SD. When the learner responds correctly with no prompt, stimulus control has transferred.
Generalization Procedures (C.8)
Task C.8 covers “generalization procedures (e.g., conduct intervention procedures across settings, people, and stimuli).” A skill isn’t fully mastered until it transfers to new contexts.
Two types of generalization
- Stimulus generalization — the same response transfers to new stimuli, settings, people, or times. A learner who greets the RBT in the therapy room and then greets the same RBT at the grocery store has generalized across settings.
- Response generalization — the topography of the response varies while achieving the same function. A learner taught to say “hi” who now says “hey,” “hello,” and “what’s up” has generalized across response forms.
How RBTs support generalization
- Vary the materials used during teaching
- Practice in multiple physical settings, not just the therapy room
- Have different people run trials — parents, other RBTs, teachers
- Fade artificial reinforcers toward natural ones
- Systematically introduce new stimuli that share features with training stimuli
Distinguishing Maintenance from Acquisition (C.9)
Task C.9 asks you to distinguish between maintenance procedures and acquisition procedures — two different phases of learning that require different RBT actions.
Acquisition
The initial learning phase. The learner does not yet reliably perform the target behavior. Procedures include:
- Continuous or dense reinforcement schedules
- Frequent prompting

Maintenance
The persistence of a skill over time after mastery. The learner already reliably performs the behavior. Procedures include:

- Little to no prompting

Common Confusion
Maintenance means the skill persists over time. Generalization (C.8) means the skill transfers across settings, people, or stimuli. They’re related but distinct — a skill can maintain in one setting without generalizing to others.
Shaping Procedures (C.10)
Task C.10 covers shaping — teaching a new behavior by reinforcing successive approximations toward the target. Each approximation must be closer to the goal than the previous one.
Shaping a vocalization: step by step
- Reinforce any vocalization (grunts, sounds, mouth movements)
- Reinforce only word-like sounds

Shaping is not chaining
- Chaining (C.5) teaches a multi-step sequence — each step is a distinct behavior

Teaching a child to say “cookie” through progressively better attempts is shaping. Teaching a child to make a sandwich by mastering “get bread,” then “open jar,” then “spread” is chaining.
Token Economies (C.11)
Task C.11 covers token economies. A token economy uses tokens (points, stickers, chips, checkmarks) as conditioned reinforcers that the learner exchanges for backup reinforcers at scheduled times.
Five components of every token economy
- Target behaviors — what earns tokens
- Tokens — the physical or visual items used
- Backup reinforcers — what tokens can be exchanged for
- Exchange rate — how many tokens equal what backup
- Exchange schedule — when exchanges happen
The most common token economy failure
Satiation on the backup reinforcer is the most common problem. A child who eagerly worked for candy tokens two weeks ago now refuses to work — the candy has lost its value. The tokens aren’t broken; the currency they buy has depreciated. Solutions include rotating backup reinforcers, running a new preference assessment, or offering a token exchange menu with multiple options.
What RBTs Can and Cannot Do in Behavior Acquisition
Every RBT exam includes scope-of-practice questions where the wrong answer sounds reasonable but crosses a boundary.
What RBTs do
- Implement teaching procedures exactly as the BCBA wrote them
- Collect accurate data on every trial or session
- Report progress, challenges, and unusual observations to the BCBA

The Big Exam Trap
Watch for answers where the RBT changes the plan independently. Even when the plan appears not to be working, even when the family requests changes — the correct answer is almost always to document observations and refer to the BCBA.

Step 1: Learn all 11 tasks by number
You should be able to state what C.1 through C.11 cover without looking. Because test items are organized by these task numbers, knowing them by number helps you quickly categorize what a question is testing.
Step 2: Read scenarios, not definitions
The RBT exam is scenario-based. You won’t be asked “define shaping.” You’ll be given a scenario and asked which technique is being used. Practice recognizing procedures from descriptions.
Step 3: Take the topic quiz until 90%+ consistent

Five Common Exam Traps in Unit C
Trap 1: The RBT “modifies” the plan
Any answer where the RBT independently changes the intervention is almost always incorrect. The right answer is typically “document and refer to the BCBA.”
Trap 2: DTT vs NET based on the setting described
