What Is Behavior Assessment in ABA?
Behavior assessment is the systematic gathering of information about a client before and during treatment — what motivates them, what skills they have, and what maintains their problem behaviors. Assessment comes first because intervention without assessment is guesswork.
Three distinct kinds of assessment appear in Unit B, and they answer three different questions:

The Verb Difference That Gets Tested
Read the BACB wording carefully. Task B.1 says RBTs conduct preference assessments — you run these yourself. Tasks B.2 and B.3 say participate in — you assist, collect data, and follow protocols, but the BCBA conducts and interprets. Exam questions are built directly on this distinction.

Conducting Preference Assessments (B.1)
Task B.1 covers “conduct preference assessments (e.g., multiple stimulus, paired stimulus, free operant).” This is the one assessment RBTs run independently, and it generates more Unit B questions than the other two tasks combined.
Why preference assessments matter
Reinforcement is the engine of every teaching procedure in Unit C. But you can’t reinforce anything if you don’t know what the learner actually values — and preferences shift constantly. A child who worked all week for bubbles may want nothing to do with them on Monday.
Preference assessments give you current, data-based information instead of assumptions. Running one at the start of a session takes a few minutes and prevents an hour of low-motivation work.
Free operant preference assessment
Items are made freely available and you simply observe. No demands, no removal, no structure. You record how long the learner engages with each item.
How to run it: Place several items in the environment. Let the learner move freely for a set period (often 5-10 minutes). Record duration of engagement with each item.
Strengths: Fast, completely non-intrusive, produces no problem behavior because nothing is ever taken away.
Limitation: Produces a rough picture, not a ranked hierarchy. A learner may spend most of the time on one item simply because it’s nearest.
Best for: Learners who become distressed when items are removed, and for quick initial screening.
Single stimulus (successive choice)
One item is presented at a time. You record whether the learner approaches it.
How to run it: Present item 1 alone, record approach or no approach. Remove it. Present item 2. Continue through all items, often across several trials each.
Strengths: Simplest format. Works for learners who can’t yet make comparative choices between two items.
Limitation: Tells you what the learner will approach, but not what they prefer relative to anything else. A learner may approach every item presented.
Best for: Learners with very limited scanning or choice-making skills.
Paired stimulus (forced choice)
Two items are presented at a time, and every item is eventually paired with every other item.
How to run it: Present two items. The learner selects one. Record the selection. Then present a different pair. Continue until all possible pairs have been presented.
Strengths: Produces the most precise preference hierarchy of any method. You end up knowing not just what the learner likes but the order they like things in.
Limitation: Time-consuming. Eight items require 28 separate pairings. That’s a long session for a young learner.
Best for: When you need a reliable ranked hierarchy and have the time to get it.
Multiple stimulus with replacement (MSW)
An array of items is presented. The learner selects one. That item is returned to the array for the next trial.
How to run it: Present an array of 5-8 items. Learner selects one and gets brief access. Replace the selected item, rotate positions, present the array again.
Strengths: Faster than paired stimulus. Identifies the single most preferred item quickly.
Limitation: The learner may select the same item every trial, which tells you the top preference but nothing about ranks 2 through 8.
Best for: Quickly identifying one strong reinforcer.
Multiple stimulus without replacement (MSWO)
An array is presented. The learner selects one. That item is removed and not returned. The array shrinks with each trial.
How to run it: Present 5-8 items in a line. Learner selects one and gets brief access. Remove that item permanently, rotate the remaining items’ positions, present again. Continue until items are exhausted or the learner stops selecting.
Strengths: Produces a full ranked hierarchy in far less time than paired stimulus. This efficiency is why MSWO is the most commonly used preference assessment in clinical practice.
Limitation: Removing preferred items can trigger problem behavior in some learners.
Best for: Most situations — it’s the practical default when a hierarchy is needed.

Memory Hook
W = With replacement — the item goes back, so you learn the favorite. WO = WithOut replacement — the item is removed, so the array shrinks and you learn the full ranking. If a question describes items being taken away as the assessment proceeds, it’s MSWO.
Preference is not the same as reinforcement
This distinction appears on the exam regularly and trips up candidates who treat the two terms as synonyms.
A preference assessment identifies what a learner chooses or approaches. A reinforcer assessment determines whether that item actually increases behavior when delivered contingently.
They usually align — but not always. A learner might consistently select a toy in a preference assessment and still show no increase in target behavior when that toy is used as a consequence. Preference predicts reinforcement; it doesn’t guarantee it.
How often to run preference assessments
Preferences change with satiation, deprivation, mood, illness, and time. Many programs run a brief MSWO at the start of each session. At minimum, reassess whenever you notice a previously effective reinforcer losing its pull.
Participating in Skill Strength and Deficit Assessments (B.2)
Task B.2 covers participating in “assessments of relevant skill strengths and deficits (e.g., curriculum-based, developmental, social skills).” Note the word participate — the BCBA conducts and interprets these; you assist.
What skill assessments do
They establish a baseline of what the learner can currently do, which drives every decision about what to teach next. Without one, a program might target skills the learner already has or skills far beyond their current repertoire.
Curriculum-based assessments
These measure performance against a structured sequence of skills organized developmentally. They map what the learner has mastered, what’s emerging, and what comes next in the sequence.
Common examples in ABA settings include the VB-MAPP (Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program), the ABLLS-R (Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills), and the AFLS (Assessment of Functional Living Skills). Each produces a profile that translates directly into teaching targets.
Developmental assessments
These compare a learner’s skills to typical developmental milestones across domains — communication, motor skills, daily living, socialization. They provide broad context rather than specific teaching targets.
Social skills assessments
These focus specifically on interaction: initiating, responding, turn-taking, perspective-taking, and maintaining social exchanges. Social skills often need targeted assessment because they can lag behind other areas even in learners with strong language.

Exam Trap
During assessment, you do not prompt. Prompting during a skill assessment inflates the learner’s apparent ability and produces an inaccurate baseline — which then leads the BCBA to target skills the learner can’t actually perform independently. Scenarios describing an RBT “helping a little” during assessment are describing an error.
Participating in Functional Assessment Procedures (B.3)
Task B.3 covers participating in “components of functional assessment procedures (e.g., descriptive assessment, functional analysis).” Functional assessment identifies why a problem behavior occurs — which determines the entire Unit D intervention that follows.
The three tiers of functional assessment
Functional assessment methods fall into three levels, ordered from least to most rigorous.
Tier 1: Indirect assessment
Information is gathered from people who know the client, without direct observation. Methods include interviews, rating scales, and questionnaires completed by caregivers, teachers, and staff.
Strength: Fast and easy to administer. Useful for generating hypotheses and identifying where to look.
Limitation: Relies entirely on memory and perception, which are unreliable. Two caregivers often report different functions for the same behavior.
RBT role: May be interviewed about observations. Does not conduct interviews with families or interpret results.
Tier 2: Descriptive assessment
Direct observation of the behavior in the natural environment, without manipulating anything. The most common form is ABC data collection.
ABC stands for:
- Antecedent — what happened immediately before the behavior
- Behavior — the behavior itself, described objectively
- Consequence — what happened immediately after
Example ABC entry: Antecedent — RBT presented a math worksheet. Behavior — client pushed materials off the table. Consequence — RBT removed the worksheet and the client was given a break.
That single entry suggests an escape function. Enough entries showing the same pattern build a strong hypothesis.
Strength: Captures behavior in its real context. More reliable than indirect methods.
Limitation: Shows correlation, not causation. You see what tends to follow the behavior, but you haven’t proven that consequence is what maintains it.
RBT role: This is where RBTs contribute most. Collecting accurate ABC data is a core responsibility.
Tier 3: Functional analysis (FA)
An experimental procedure in which conditions are deliberately manipulated to test each possible function directly. This is the only method that establishes cause rather than correlation.
The standard FA conditions:

The play condition is the control. If behavior occurs at high rates in the demand condition and near zero in play, escape is the likely function.
Strength: The most rigorous method available. Directly demonstrates function.
Limitation: Requires deliberately evoking the problem behavior, which raises safety and ethical considerations. Requires BCBA design, direct supervision, and appropriate consent.
RBT role: May assist under direct BCBA supervision — running a condition as scripted, collecting data, managing materials. RBTs never design an FA, decide conditions, or interpret results.

Unit B has the sharpest scope-of-practice line of any domain, because the same activity can be inside or outside your role depending on which assessment it belongs to.

Watch for answers where the RBT concludes something from assessment data — “the RBT determines the behavior is attention-maintained” or “the RBT identifies which skills to target next.” Collecting the data is your job. Drawing conclusions from it is the BCBA’s.
How to Study Unit B Efficiently
Unit B is only 8 questions, which makes it the highest points-per-hour domain on the exam. The content is narrow enough to genuinely finish.
Step 1: Master the five preference assessments
Most Unit B questions come from B.1. Learn all five formats — free operant, single stimulus, paired stimulus, MSW, MSWO — and be able to identify each from a scenario description. Focus especially on the MSW versus MSWO distinction, since that pairing is tested constantly.
Step 2: Lock in the “conduct versus participate” line
RBTs conduct preference assessments. RBTs participate in skill and functional assessments. This single distinction resolves a large share of Unit B scenario questions.
Step 3: Learn the five FA conditions
Attention, demand, tangible, alone, and play. Know what each one tests and remember that play is the control condition.

Six Common Exam Traps in Unit B
Trap 1: Confusing MSW with MSWO
With replacement (MSW) returns the selected item to the array and identifies the top preference. Without replacement (MSWO) removes it, shrinking the array and producing a full ranked hierarchy.
Trap 2: Treating preference and reinforcement as the same thing
